Death in police raid: Moga victim’s family does volte-face

The family members, who were alleging till Saturday night that the police have beaten Kala Singh to death during a raid, have turned hostile in less than 12 hours, as in their police complaint on Sunday they stated that the deceased was cultivating paddy crop when he got a sudden cardiac arrest in the evening.

As per the information, Kala (62), a resident of Khote village, died allegedly after cops led by the Nihal Singh Wala station house officer (SHO) Rajinder Singh along with excise and taxation officials came to raid their house and they allegedly beat him with sticks, which resulted in on-the-spot death of Kala.

Reportedly, the police team had got a tip-off that Kala and his son Mottu Singh were into making illicit country-made liquor, however, during the raid they didn’t recover anything.

Mottu, who was claiming that when his father came to his rescue after the police team detained him; cops started beating his father with sticks and a blow to the head killed him on the spot, in his police statement stated that his father was cultivating paddy in the fields of farmer Jagraj Singh and died of sudden cardiac arrest.

Sources said that the family was under the pressure of the police, who to save themselves, have allegedly paid a ‘‘handsome’’ amount to the kin for changing their statements. They said Congress leader Darshan Singh Brar also played the role of a mediator between the two parties and convinced the family for a compromise.
