A day after the Amritsar City police arrested a cop identified as Ajmer Singh, a head constable with the GRP, on charges of raping a tourist from Delhi in a hotel here, the woman, on whose complaint a case was registered against the cop, has backtracked from her statement, saying the accused did not rape her.
On Thursday, the woman had approached the police with a complaint against the cop alleging that on November 13, she was sitting in the waiting room of the Amritsar railway station at about 10.30pm when the accused approached her in uniform and offered to help her get a room in a hotel.
The woman had alleged that the accused later returned in civil clothes and took her to a hotel, where he allegedly bolted the room from inside, threatened her children with dire consequences, took the woman to the bathroom and raped her thrice. She had also charged the accused with stealing around Rs 11,000 in cash from her bag.
The woman had alleged that while fleeing the accused had dropped his identity card and the case was registered against him on the basis of the identity card. A case under sections 376/380/506 of the IPC was registered against the accused at the Civil Lines police station.
ASI Vijay Kumar, in charge, Shivala Bhaiyan police post, who is investigating the matter, said Ajmer Singh was presented in court. "The woman's statement was recorded under section 164 in front of the judge. She has backtracked from the charges of rape saying the head constable did not rape her," he said. According to the police, earlier, in a similar case in Jalandhar, the woman had taken back her accusation.
