A month after the murder of senior journalist KJ Singh and his bed-ridden mother Gurcharan Kaur at their house in Phase 3 B2, the Mohali police on Monday picked up three- four people from Bathinda.
The suspects have been picked up on the basis of photos released on Saturday and analysis of dump of over 600 phone numbers analysed by Mohali Police, it is learnt. Though, the police have not confirmed this development, sources said the suspects were brought to Mohali on Monday evening. It is for the first time since murder took place on September 22 that some suspects have been picked up by police. Sources said that one of those that the police have picked up is identified as Deepa. Sources hinted the murder could be a case of contract killing and initial information suggest they were not known to KJ.
On Saturday, the police had released photographs of five suspects, culled from footage of closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras installed near KJ’s house and market in Phase 3B2. Mohali superintendent of police (SP) Harbir Singh Atwal, who is part of the special investigating team (SIT) formed by the Punjab government, had said the five youths — in their 20s — were seen moving around KJ’s house and making videos of the area between 4pm to 6pm on September 22.

Cops have quizzed KJ’s kin regarding his property details and to see if there was any friction within the family. Initially, they had also not ruled out the murder as crime of passion. KJ’s mother had reportedly made changes to her will. KJ’s former women colleagues who were in touch with him, have also been questioned. When investigation hit dead end, the police also interrogated around 70 criminals, most of them behind bars, involved in heinous crimes and contract killings. Cops had been maintaining that there was no forced entry into the house, pointing to the involvement of a person known to KJ.
KJ’s car not recovered yet
Police are yet to recover KJ’s green Ford Ikon, which was parked outside his house and has been missing after the crime. On analysing the CCTV footage, the car (PB 65A 0164) was seen passing through the Phase 3B2/7 light point around midnight.
