Utility poles, carrying electricity and telephone wires erected right in the middle of roads of the city have added to the woes of commuters. Call it civic authorities' apathy or their ignorance to realise the serious risk these poles pose to the lives of commuters, they have failed to remove them.
Residents across the city complain that the poles are like invisible ghosts during the night time as incidents of bikes and cars colliding into them had become a regular site.
Though the locals claimed that they had filed numerous complaints with the municipal corporation authorities but all in vain.
A cursory look at the affairs proves that in some areas, the poles have been erected on blind turns of the streets which increase the risk for commuters.
Barjinder Sharma, resident of Anand Nagar, said, "The poles have added to the woes of commuters as one has to be cautious while driving around them, especially when on blind turns. It's high time the MC does something in this regard."
Meanwhile, senior citizens of the city rued that due to the poles, during night time they haveto take different and longer routes which was exasperating and taxing for them, but they had to do so in order to avoid accidents.
When the mayor Amarinder Bajaj was contacted on the matter, he took refuge in the contention that the poles did not fall under the jurisdiction of the civil authorities. He said: "The electricity board is responsible for the poles. The MC has no role in it."
