As the city gears up to welcome the year 2014, the police have warned city residents against indulging in hooliganism and chalked out a security and traffic plan for New Year's eve. The police commissioner has imposed a ban on carrying weapons on New Year's Eve under section 144 of the CrPC.
Police commissioner Nirmal Singh Dhillon said city residents should celebrate without fear, as the police would be there for security. “But, we will not allow hooliganism,” he said.
The police have divided the city into 12 separate sections and an officer above the rank of assistant commissioner of police (ACP) will be responsible for each section.
Besides, the police have also planned to step up security at Sarabha Nagar main market, Aarti Chowk, Jagraon Bridge, Jalandhar Bypass and Samrala Chowk. Ambulances will also be stationed at these places.
The police commissioner said that to ensure there's no untoward situation, the police would establish 13 check points at the entry points of the city. He added that 31 more checkpoints would be established with the city limits. The police have also designated parking spaces in markets and outside malls. “Wrongly parked vehicles will be towed away,” he said.
The police commissioner said to ease the flow of the traffic, no heavy vehicle would be allowed to enter the city after 2 pm on December 31, and a special diversion plan has been chalked out special diversion for heavy vehicles. Teams of traffic police will check drunken and reckless driving.
