Trains to and from Amritsar were disrupted after hundreds of farmers staged a dharna on tracks at Amritsar railway station on Tuesday morning to demand compensation of Rs 10 lakh for the family of a farmer Jagir Singh who died while returning from Delhi.
The protesters staged the dharna by keeping the body of Jagir Singh on the tracks.
Many trains, including Paschim Express, Dadar, Jan Shatabadi, Jan Sewa and others were not able to leave the station due to protest.
Passengers had a tough time as many trains coming from Delhi side were stopped at Manawala (12 km from Amritsar) and passengers told to deboard.
Dr Satnam Singh Ajnala of Jamhoori Kisan Sabha said, "We had gone for a protest to Delhi. While coming back, Jagir Singh felt some uneasiness near Ludhiana and later was found dead. As he had gone for the cause of farmer community, we want a compensation of Rs 10 lakh and a job for his family member from the state government."
Talks were on between farmer leaders and the administration to resolve the issue. Reports later said that the blockade was lifted after the administration accepted to give Rs 5 lakh as compensation and a job to eligible member of the farmer's family.
