Convict Bhupinder Singh, who had earlier indulged in violence with three jail inmates on Sunday, has been shifted to the central jail in Bathinda.

Bhupinder is the resident of Lopa village under Kalanaur police station in Gurdaspur district, and has been undergoing imprisonment for the past fifteen years under Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS Act); after 15kg heroin was recovered from his possession.

The other three accused persons have been identified as Jugraj Singh, Vijay Kumar and Mukadar Masih.

On Sunday, he had quarrelled with three jail inmates and later misbehaved with the head constable Darbara Singh, who was trying to pacify them.

Following this, Bhupinder and the other three inmates were presented before the deputy superintendent of police (DSP) Amrik Singh in the jail vicinity. During the meeting, all the four attacked the DSP.

The four slapped the DSP and tossed his turban.

Fearing a large-scale violence by the jail inmates, security was beefed up in Gurdaspur central jail.

Last month, extra police force from other districts, including 300 commandos of Special Weapons And Tactics (SWAT), were pressed into service to control violence by jail inmates, who had breached the outer wall of the jail for jailbreak. Police had then resorted to heavy firing to check the jailbreak.

The jail inmates grew violent over the strictness being maintained by the jail authorities while allowing them to meet their kin.

Besides this, the inmates complain of bad living conditions due to more prisoners (967) being kept than the sanctioned capacity of 700 at Gurdaspur jail.

Meanwhile, a case under Sections 353 and 186 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC)has been registered at Gurdaspur city police station against Bhupinder Singh and the other three jail inmates for assaulting deputy superintendent of police Amrik Singh.

Gurdaspur senior superintendent of police (SSP) Bhupinderjeet Singh Virk said DSP (city) Azad Devinder Singh is conducting an inquiry into the Gurdaspur jail violence incident and the report is awaited.
