After inaugurating electronic toilets the deputy commissioner (DC) J Ganesan said that four more similar smart facilities would be constructed at busy public places of the district on pilot basis.

Two automated, self-cleaning and unmanned toilets equipped with steel platforms are being constructed in the market place at Nehru Place, one each at Atal Park in Karnal city, Assandh and Gharaunda.

"On the basis of its success the administration may provide more e-toilets. A unit costs nearly five lakh and it works automatically to ensure complete hygiene. It also works on power backup," he said.

"People can use these toilets by inserting a nominal amount of Rs 1/2. Subsequently, the door is opened and occupancy of the cabin is displayed outside. After every five uses, it automatically flushes the floor," added the DC.

The e-toilets are developed by Thiruvananthapuram-based Eram Scientific Solutions (ESS), a pioneer in automated public toilets in the country.

Ganesan said that if the pilot project gets a positive response from the public, the new-age bio-digester toilets, the technology which uses bacteria to treat waste, may be installed.
