"The gang was busted after an unidentified body was found on the main road of Chohan village on the night of June 11," Amritsar (rural) SSP PS Virk said at a press conference in Amritsar on Saturday.

"Investigation revealed that the victim Avtar Chand was a taxi driver and used to drive a Liva car, which was missing."

"Following this, a team led by SP (detective) Jasdeep Singh picked up Major Singh, Amrik Singh, Gurdev Singh and Jagdeep Singh," said Virk. "From them the Liva car was recovered along with two others."

Further investigation revealed that the arrested men were part of an inter-state gang, which hired taxis and after becoming friendly with the drivers either killed them or made them unconscious.
The gang would then drive away with the taxis.

"The stolen cars were disposed of with the help of some notorious persons who had been in jails in the past," said the SSP.
