The Public Works Department (PWD) is all set to open the 800-meter long railway over bridge (ROB) opposite the Pushpa Gujral Science City before its deadline of December 2014.
Once the ROB becomes functional, commuters travelling to Kapurthala from Jalandhar or vice-versa will have an easy ride on this road and save 20 minutes of their time.
The foundation stone of the Rs 34 crore project was laid by deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal. The project was awarded to PWD in June 2013 and was expected to be finished in 18 months.
As construction of the ROB is on in full swing, authorities claim the project can be completed a month before its deadline.
The funds to construct the bridge have been provided by the state government's infrastructure development board (PADB) and a part of the share has been contributed by the railway authorities.
Till now, 90 percent work including building of the structure and slab work of the bridge has been accomplished by the authorities at a cost of Rs 23 crore.
Executive engineer of PWD, Pawan Kumar, said only 10 percent construction work, like carpeting of roads, was left which would be completed within two months and then the bridge would be functional.
"It was possible to complete the project before the deadline only because of the active participation of the railway authorities. They invited tenders a year before the start of the construction and the government also sanctioned funds on time", Kumar said.

{{/usCountry}}At present, commuters to Kapurthala use the Dhaliwal Dona village way by covering an extra distance of six kilometers to reach the city due to the construction of the over bridge while commuters going from Kapurthala to Jalandhar cover five more kilometers as they have to use the Wadala Khurd village road.
