As many as 305 students of Class 12 await scholarship under Dr Hargobind Khurana Post-Matric Scholarship Scheme since last one year.
The state government started this scholarship scheme in 2013 and the students who score above 80 per cent in Class 10 get this scholarship of Rs 30,000 per annum.
The district education office has received an amount of Rs 38.12 lakh and have written to director public instructions (secondary) Balbir Singh Dhol to give approval of clearance of bills.
The state government started this scheme for poor meritorious students of government schools in the name of Dr Hargobind Khorana - an eminent biochemist of Punjabi-origin and a Nobel Prize winner. The government started this scheme to ensure poor students get quality education and to bridge the gap with their convent-educated peers.
Talking to Hindustan Times, Meera Joshi, a parent, said, "My daughter scored 84 per cent in Class 10. I had not admitted her to the Residential School for Meritorious just to avail this scholarship. But since last year, she has not received the scholarship amount. I am in a tight spot. I am a daily wager and cannot afford to send her to tuitions or pay her school fees. As she has opted for non-medical stream, she needs extra coaching. It was my mistake that I did not send her to residential school as students get all facilities free of cost there."
A principal of government senior secondary school, on condition of anonymity, said, "We have 10 students in our school who have scored above 80 per cent marks in Class 10, but the students have not got the scholarship amount since last one year. We have received a lot of queries from parents and we have informed them to contact the district education office (DEO)."

{{/usCountry}}District education officer (DEO), secondary, Paramjit Kaur Chahal said, "We have received an amount of Rs 38.12 lakh and the bills have been sent to the head office (DPI office) for approval. As soon as we get the nod from them, the scholarship amount will be transferred in the accounts of the students."
