A protest demonstration was held by auto drivers near Chand cinema against traffic police on Wednesday for making the road from old vegetable market towards railway station as no auto zone.

The protest started at around 9am during which the auto drivers raised slogans against the traffic police for stopping them to going towards railway station directly from Jalandhar bypass. The auto drivers were then dispersed by police that reached the spot.

Union leader of Auto Drivers Union Om Prakash said, “The traffic police have installed no entry board for auto rickshaws going towards railway station. City bus service is allowed to go on the same route but rickshaws have been stopped.”

Auto rickshaws have been considered to be a major source of traffic jams in the area near railway station and Clock Tower. All efforts in the past to curb the menace of illegal autos have failed. However, assistant commissioner of police Richa Agnihotri along with other senior police officials decided to stop plying of autos in the area.

She said that those autos intending to go to Clock Tower could go through Deepak Cineme road.
