The three-wheeler unions in the city staged protest against autos plying illegally on the city roads outside the minisecretariat on Friday.
The union is against autos running on the city roads on taxi permits. The union also blamed the district transport officers for shielding illegal auto-rickshaws plying in the city.
It is learnt that the threewheelers unions have given a memorandum to district transport officer Anil Kumar Garg around two weeks back, seeking ban on illegal autos in the city. The unions have given ultimatum till April 9.
President of the Zila Ludhiana Three-wheeler Driver Union Om Parkash Jodhan said the union had held several meetings with the district transport officer in this regard, but to no avail.
“While the DTO had given assurance to check this ongoing practice in the city during one such meeting, but no action has been taken in this regard till now,” he added. He said such autorickshaws were more than 5,000 in numbers. “The auto agencies in connivance with the district transport officers have shown the autos as five-seater vehicles and have managed to get taxi permit,” he added.
According to a taxi permit, a vehicle cannot pickup passengers randomly from the roads, but such autos have been illegally picking up the passengers. Members of LPG and CNG auto union welfare society also joined the protest.

{{/usCountry}}The three-wheeler unions started stopping three-wheelers, asking them to join the protest. They also forced passengers to alight from three-wheelers. A jam-like situation was witnessed at the Ferozepur Road. Following which, assistant commissioner of police (ACP), traffic, Richa Agnihotri warned the unions not to create inconvenience for commuters.
