Every school in Punjab will have separate toilets for girls and boys by August this year. For the purpose, there is a need to construct 1,000 more toilets in the government schools of the state and these will be constructed by August this year. This was stated by principal secretary, school education, C Roul during his visit to Senior Secondary Residential School for Meritorious, Ludhiana, on Friday.
Reviewing the school functioning, Roul said, “Under the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, Prime Minister Narinder Modi is monitoring the Swachh School programme. We are committed to build separate toilets for boys and girls and will construct them in next four months. In Ludhiana, there is no government senior secondary school that requires separate toilets for boys and girls, but there is a demand of additional 324 toilets. In primary schools, there is a need to construct 50 separate toilets for boys and girls.
“We also want to ensure that schools are providing potable drinking water to students. I don’t have the exact figures that how many samples have failed the purity test in the state. However, in Ludhiana, 35 samples failed purity test in senior secondary schools. There are 529 schools in total. In primary, out of 1,005 schools, 77 failed purity test. We are aware that the water samples have failed and RO is the only solution to this problem. Government and community have to come together for the purpose so that we we can install ROs is schools wherever required.”
“We had conducted a survey in September last year and found that there are thousands of unsafe classrooms in government schools of the state. We have decided to construct new classrooms under Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) and Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan (RMSA) in next two years,” he added. “To fill the vacant posts of the government schools in the state, we are recruiting 5,000 teachers,” said Roul.

{{/usCountry}}When asked that posts of watchman are lying vacant in the government schools of the state, he said, “I am aware of the issue and we have written to the Centre to get an approval to recruit watchmen in the government schools.”
It is pertinent to mention here that 1,339 posts of watchmen are lying vacant in the government schools of the state and Ludhiana district tops the list with 156 vacant posts.
