A Sangrur resident has been booked for the theft of his own vehicle.

Chandigarh police had impounded Harjinder Singh’s Alto car for wrong parking at the Sector-26 vegetable market on Tuesday morning. Later, the 34-year-old went to the Sector-29 traffic police lines and allegedly took off with his vehicle kept there after roughing up a Home Guards volunteer.

The volunteer, Vijay Shankar, reported the theft.

Police said Harjinder’s car, bearing a Punjab registration number, was impounded as it was parked on the road.

Later, the Sangrur man reportedly went to the traffic lines and said he wanted to check the car’s documents.

After he was allowed to inspect the vehicle, Harjinder drove it away after pushing the Home Guards volunteer, who tried to stop him, police said.

Cops gave him a chase and arrested him besides seizing the vehicle again.

Police have registered a case under Sections 379 (theft), 332 (voluntarily causing hurt to deter public servant from his duty), 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty) of the Indian Penal Code at the Industrial Area police station.
