Sarabjit Kaur (25), a resident of Dhalle Kee village in Moga district, was married to Beant Singh of Karainwala village in the district. She, however, left her in-laws’ house and started staying with Nachhatar (25) at Dumniwala village in Ferozepur around six months ago.

She had reportedly filed some cases against her parents as well as in-laws, sources said.

Around 15 armed people who came in three vehicles stormed into Nachhatar’s house at 11am on Monday and kidnapped Surinder Kaur (50), mother of Nachhatar, and fled reportedly towards Amritsar. Surinder is wife of Manjit Singh, an Akali Sarpanch.

“After kidnapping Surinder, the accused allegedly asked the victim’s family to hand over Sarabjit if they want Surinder back,” sources close to Nachhatar’s family said.

The police later arrested Gurmel Singh while efforts were on to nab the other accused, inspector general of police, Bathinda range, SK Asthana told HT.
