Ten days after twin blasts at Maur Mandi in Bathinda, the Election Commission on Thursday gave its nod to give ex gratia relief of Rs 5 lakh to those killed and Rs 50,000 to the injured.

As the model code of conduct was in force, the Bathinda administration on February 2 sent a communiqué to the elections commission asking it to allow disbursal of compensation to the victims from chief minister’s relief fund. Six persons, including three children, were killed and 10 others received injuries in blasts near a Congress rally at Maur on January 31.
The poll panel has written to additional principal secretary to the chief minister to ensure that the relief is paid by government officials and the issue should not be politicised.
“Following EC nod, compensation will be provided to victim families in the coming week,” said deputy commissioner Ghanshyam Thori.
