Two days ahead of Diwali, the municipal corporation destroyed 400 kgs of sweets and 100 boxes of cakes that were found stored in unhygienic conditions in various parts of the city. The MC team also found a large number of insects in a few containers containing sweets such as ‘rasgullas’.
The MC team comprising senior health officer Dr Amarpreet Sibia and health officer Dr Charanjit Uppal besides other staff conducted raids at four sweetmeat shops and three bakeries at Nawa Mohalla, Karimpura Bazar, Lakkar Bazar and Subhani building.
Health inspector Ravi Sharma said the raids were conducted at Super Lovely Sweets, Arora Sweets and Jagdish Sweets besides Royal Bakery and other shops.
Additional commissioner Rishipal Singh said sweets were found stored in unhygienic conditions. “We have already warned the owners of sweetmeat shops to ensure hygienic conditions at their workshops. Challans have been issued to the violators,”he said.
Sharma said the MC team also destroyed the sweets stored in unhygienic conditions. He said such drives would continue in coming days, as the MC was already running the Swachh Ludhiana mission.
An official who was part of the drive said the team found that sweets were being prepared in unsanitary conditions at workshops. He said most of the workers were not wearing gloves and head covers. Also, the sweets were not covered properly.
