As a part of its scheme of making Jalandhar a ‘smart city’, municipal corporation Jalandhar (MCJ) is planning to make Model Town market, a free wi-fi zone.
Mayor Sunil Jyoti said that the civic body is still on the planning stage and has been identifying places within the municipal limit to provide free wi-fi service. “Large footfall will be major factor for choosing the areas,” he added.
If the plan gets implemented, Model Town market will be the first area of the city to have free wi-fi service.
“We will soon invite private players to sponsor the project and collaborate with us,” the mayor said.
Notably, Model Town market that largely consists of showrooms and restaurants is also regarded as a ‘posh market’ as it largely caters to upper strata of the society.
However, the mayor said that Model town market was not the first point where the civic body had planned to provide wi-fi service. “We were earlier planning to provide free wi-fi service at the city railway station due to large footfall. But since the Railways has already made the facility available there, we will now be identifying places in the city that can be turned into wi-fi zones,” he said. He further added that the city’s interstate bus terminal is also such spot.
Officials however said they are only planning to provide free wi-fi during certain time-period of the day.
