Finally, fulfilling the long-pending demand of Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU), the Punjab Cabinet has given its nod to make Bachelor in Fisheries Sciences (BFSc ) degree holder eligible for the post of fisheries officer in the Punjab government.
Earlier, the GADVASU passouts with BFSc degree were not eligible to take the entrance for the post of fisheries officer in the state fisheries department, for which eligibility was BSc (medical). After being recruited as fisheries officers, the candidates were supposed to do a diploma in fisheries for promotion.
Since employment avenues were scarce for BFSc degree holders, many of the seats in the course used to remain vacant. GADVASU has 23 seats (18 for Punjab domicile students, three for Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) nominee and two for Kashmiri migrants) for the course.
“Though the students of our two batches that passed out from the college of fisheries till now bagged good jobs, still the response of applicants was not as warm since the course was not eligible to take the job of fisheries officer. Now with the cabinet nod, the course will be in the limelight,” a senior varsity official said.
Ever since the College of Fisheries came into existence in 2008, vet varsity authorities have been taking up the matter to amend the recruitment rules with the Punjab government. Vice-chancellor VK Taneja had brought up the matter to the notice of chief minister Parkash Singh Badal during a meeting recently.
