In a move that will bring cheer to many, the UT administration has increased the upper age limit for joining government jobs in Chandigarh from 25 years to 37 years.
Taking credit for being the force behind the decision, local member of Parliament (MP) Kirron Kher announced this while addressing mediapersons at the UT guest house on Friday.
Kher said the decision for entry into government service (in direct recruitment) for technical and non-technical posts in Chandigarh has been taken on the Punjab pattern and it will be applicable with immediate effect, reading a notification issued by the UT department of personnel.
Various employee, student and resident welfare associations, which had been demanding the same for long, thanked Kher, who in turn appreciated UT administrator VP Singh Badnore and adviser Parimal Rai for taking a timely decision on this.
“I had taken up the matter with the ministry of home affairs (MHA) and I am happy that it has finally seen the light of day,” Kher said while showing a clipping of the same.
The Centre in letter last month had conveyed that MHA does not have any role in enhancing the age limit in Chandigarh. The letter said it was a local subject and hence appropriate action was required to be taken by the Chandigarh administration itself.

{{/usCountry}}She said city residents had pleaded that the UT administration had raised the educational qualification for the posts of ministerial cadre from Class 12 to graduate, but the age limit for applying for the same remained the same (18-25).
“Whenever vacancies are advertised, a major chunk of vacancies is grabbed by candidates from Punjab and Haryana, as they are eligible to apply in the UT. On the other hand, job seekers from Chandigarh cannot apply in the neighbouring states as they don’t have domicile certificates of these states,” she said.
