The long wait for Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS) seems to be over as 25 buses will hit the roads of Amritsar in the first phase by end of November.
The project has been a cause of trouble for people during its construction. The work is almost complete now and awaits the arrival of buses.
As many as 93 high-floor air conditioned buses will ply on the city roads under this project. But initially, only 25 buses will start functioning, with a gradual add-on.
The project covers a stretch of 32-km and aims to provide a comfortable transport system to the residents with 60 stoppages.
BRTS will see buses plying on Batala Road, Court Road, Mall Road and University Road, among others. A dedicated corridor has been built for these buses to run on.
Public works department (PWD) executive engineer JS Sodhi said, “Construction work of the project is almost complete, leaving minor works. 25 buses will reach the stand by end of this month and these might be inaugurated by November end.”
Sodhi, who is nodal officer of the project, said that arrangements are made to make it easy for passengers to reach the stops. “We are building foot over-bridges at few locations and at some places traffic lights will be installed,” he said.

TICKETING ISSUE YET TO BE SOLVED
Even as the project is all set to be inaugurated, the decision on tickets for different routes is yet to be decided.
Once the buses reach the stand, government will look for an operator who can run the buses and issue tickets.
The passengers will get tickets at the stop. The buses, once in full strength, will be plying at the frequency of 5 minutes.
