Vini Mahajan, principal secretary, medical education, said the matter is being taken up at the highest level of the government. “We are hopeful of getting 50 more MBBS seats for the college,” she said.

In the earlier inspection of Patiala college and DMC Ludhiana, there were issues related to the number of senior resident doctors, which were not adequate in the colleges of Punjab. Similarly, infrastructure like the size of classrooms and auditoria were also common issues with the state medical colleges, which the MCI pointed out in its report.

Last week, the MCI had allowed 50 MBBS seats each to Sri Guru Ram Das Institute of Medical Sciences and Research, Amritsar, and Guru Gobind Singh Medical College, Faridkot.

Sources in the department of medical education confirmed that the college now could admit 150 students in the course instead of 100. The state has 1,020 MBBS seats, if the Patiala seats are increased, the number will reach 1,070.
