Rahul, Amarinder at Radha Soami dera to seek support from sect head

Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi on Saturday arrived at the Radha Soami sect headquarters in Beas, 45 km from here, to seek its chief Gurinder Singh Dhillon’s support ahead of the Punjab assembly polls due early next year. State Congress chief Capt Amarinder Singh reached Beas earlier in the day.

Rahul’s chartered flight arrived directly from Bengaluru in the evening, Congress sources said. He will spend night at the sect headquarters and on Sunday attend the ‘satsang’ (discourse) by Dhillon. He would then meet Dhillon over breakfast at his residence inside the dera.

Rahul will discuss the ongoing political scenario with Dhillon while urging him to support the Congress to form the government in the state, sources said.

In the past, Rahul’s mother and party chief Sonia Gandhi had also visited the Beas dera to meet the sect head.

The meeting comes in the wake of Dhillon’s brother-in-law Parminder Singh Sekhon being appointed as adviser to chief minister Parkash Singh Badal in October. The sect holds a strong enough to influence among the people and its support to a political party can play an important in the upcoming polls.
