The arrears pertain to pay revision under the Sixth Pay Commission of the UGC. The pending amount is for the period of 43 months from January 1, 2006 to August 31, 2009.

Jaswinder Brar, convener of the front said, the withholding of 20 per cent amount of arrears was against the government's own decision of paying the full arrears in three instalments.

As per the finance department's own notification, duly issued on January 2, 2013, the Punjab government had made a public commitment to release pay arrears in three instalments.

"The state government has released the 80 per cent amount of arrears but has withheld the 20 per cent amount which was unjustified, unconstitutional and against the government's own notification," he said.

Members of the front urged the chief minister to order the release of the amount before May 31.
