A theft of Rs 24-lakh cash and 204 silver coins at a Machaki Kalan co-operative bank in Faridkot district came to light on Monday morning when the office reopened after day off.
Thieves had broken in through a window, on Saturday night probably, and used gas cutters to open the safe. Senior superintendent of police SS Maan inspected the scene of crime and confirmed that a case had been registered on a complaint from the bank manager.
The targeted bank branch is on the village outskirts and has no security camera or guard. Bank employees avoided answering questions related to the security apparatus. “The bank had none,” said DSP Brar, “even after police had counselled various bank officials in a recent meeting to install surveillance systems.”
Bank’s senior manager PS Sandhu said he placed orders for security cameras with a company on May 25.
