Taking a serious note of incidents of sacrilege of holy books of different religions, the district administration has decided to install closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras across the district.
For this purpose, the administration has identified 800 sites where 1,750 CCTV cameras will be installed.
Chairing a peace committee meeting in Bathinda, deputy commissioner Basant Garg said the decision of installing cameras has been taken to keep a check on desecration incidents to maintain law and order in the district.
“The list of identified places has been sent to the state government”, the DC said. He added that village panchayats have been asked to spare funds to install cameras on main roads of villages.
“The managements of different gurdwaras and temples too have been directed to install CCTV cameras in the premises of temples and gurdwaras so that an eye could be kept on anti-social elements,” he said.
Addressing members of Muslim, Sikh, Hindu and Christian communities, the DC said that the government was committed to maintain peace and harmony in state with the cooperation of the people.
He added that to spread the message of peace in every nook and corner of the district, peace committees have been formed at the sub-divisional level too. As per available information, the subdivision-level peace committee members too would take initiatives for maintaining peace in society.

Prominent among those present at the meeting included senior superintendent of police Rajeshwar Singh Sidhu, mayor Balwant Rai Nath, district transport officer Latif Ahmed and others.
