The tiff between the labourers and the management of Glaxo Smithklime Ltd took a new turn, as the labourers went on complete strike after the management suspended the labour union president, Mewa Singh, who was leading the protest against the company management, on Saturday evening.
Meanwhile, the meetings between the labour commissioner, the labour union and the company management yielded no result. Now, the issue might be referred to the labour court.
Patiala assistant labour commissioner Jitendra Pal Singh visited the plant on Sunday after the unit came to a halt due to the complete strike by labourers.
It must be mentioned that labourers had been on chain hunger strike since March 17.
The workers alleged that the company and the administration were hand-in-glove. “The labour union president is a ‘protected worker’ of the company, who has been suspended after the authorisation from the assistant labour commissioner office only. The provision is given in the labour law to safeguard the leaders who are representing the demands of the workers,” said Randhir Singh, general secretary of Milk Food Products Workers’ Union. “The company management violated the law by suspending the leader and that too on false allegations of misconduct,” he added.
Meanwhile, the assistant labour commissioner visited the workers and listened to their grievances. He said he was not consulted by the company before suspending Mewa Singh. The officer also met with the management and convinced both the parties for a meeting at the labour commissioner’s office on Monday.
