Sahib, a farmer, and his wife Rupinder Kaur, have been living in California with his daughter for the past five years. His two sons, Chanranjit and Sharanjit, stay in Ludhiana.

“I have also stayed in the US for at least four years. Such racial attacks are common there. After the incident, my father is in a state of shock, but the police have acted swiftly. One of the accused has been nabbed,” Charanjit said.

He added, “Such incidents happen, especially with Sikhs, due to their separate identity, but I never thought that my father will be one of the victims.”

“My father was last here in March. I came to know from my sister that he was on a morning walk, when two men assaulted him. The incident has been caught on CCTV. My father could have received even more grievous injuries if his neighbour had not come to his rescue,” he added.

“I have spoken to my father. He does not know much English, but he figured out that assailants had shouted, ‘You Indians go back’,” Charanjit added.
