Every year, the so-called festival season witnesses huge sale of sweets and milk products vis-à-vis increasing number of adulteration cases.

Big sweet shops order milk, khoya, paneer etc in advance and utilise these as per their requirement; however, long preservation of milk products results in contamination.

The department starts anti-adulteration campaign during Diwali only by the time more than half of milk products have already been sold out and sweets and milk products sold during festivals like Teej, Rakshabandhan go unchecked.

District health officer (DHO) Dr Kulwinder Singh said: “I have joined in Ludhiana recently. However, in view of upcoming festivals, I have ordered my teams to keep tabs on milk and its products. In addition, on Saturday, we collected 10 samples of milk from various parts of the city.”

Dr Kulwinder said, “The department always keeps a tab on adulteration. As milk is the base product for sweets, we have started drive by checking adulteration in milk.”
