It happened around 8pm when the family was returning to Barnala from the wedding of the son of Dasuya legislator Sukhjit Kaur Sahi in Jalandhar. Harjit Singh (40); his wife, Sumandeep Kaur (38); and daughter, Ramandeep Kaur (11), are the victims. Harjit's another daughter, Poonampreet Kaur (14), survived the accident.

Harjit, who was driving the car, lost control of it and the vehicle slipped into the Sirhind-Bathinda Canal near Sangrur, the district police have said. The couple failed to unlock the safety belts and drowned. Poonampreet Kaur managed to get free of the car, which enabled passerby to bring her out of the water.

The victims, from Mangewal village in Barnala district, were close relatives of Shiromani Akali Dal leader Balwant Singh Ramoowalia. The police salvaged the car with help of a crane and sent the bodies for autopsy.
