Taking note of the complaint by an HIV positive woman, who was allegedly refused treatment at the Khanna civil hospital, the assistant civil surgeon has directed the district family welfare officer (DFWO) to conduct an inquiry.
The woman alleged that the hospital’s senior medical officer didn’t provide her treatment and referred her to Lord Mahavira Civil Hospital, Ludhiana, at the last hour, just because she was HIV positive, adding that the act could have endangered her and her newborn’s life.
Assistant civil surgeon Dr Manjeet Singh said, “Such complaints can’t be taken lightly and thus department needs to know the truth. Therefore, I have forwarded the complaint to the DFWO, who will submit a final report after investigation.”
DFWO Dr Maninder Singh said, “I have asked the senior medical officer, Khanna, to present his view point in the matter. After receiving the answer I will initiate the inquiry.”
He said the inquiry’s priority was to find out why the patient was referred to another hospital for delivery.
On the other hand, Khanna SMO Dr Manohar Lal has submitted his report in the matter. Dr Lal said, “In my report I have advised that a patient should be brought to the nearest government hospital first. Secondly, the outreach worker brought the patient to Khanna hospital at the last minute without consulting that if the hospital had a gynaecologist. Action should be taken against the outreach worker, as due to lack of coordination the whole situation became complex.”
