Two-day Basant Mela held on the theme of 'Beti Bachao Beti Padhao'

The Lions Club Ashirwad organised a two-day Basant Mela, which concluded here late Sunday evening.Held in the heart of the town, the mela, third by this non-government organisation, in a row during the last three years, received huge response as about 30,000 people from all sections of society visited the event.

Based on the theme of 'Beti Bachao Beti Padhao' campaign, the mela had many women-oriented events including female kite-flying competition, poem recitation and painting competitions.

The organisers burnt reels of the 'Chinese string' to spread awareness among the people against ifts use for kite-flying.

More than 50 exhibition-cum-sale stalls had been set up at the mela.

"Rarely any activity is held in this border town for the entertainment of the people, but the initiative on the part of the club is a welcome step," remarked Supriya Tuli, one of the visitors.

Various eminent artistes of Punjabi music and the film industry cast a spell over the crowd, including Dilpreet Dhillon, Anmol Gagan Maan, Jenny Johal, Anantpal Billa, Happy Raikoti, Sargam, Jasvinder Singh Kaka, Mohdeep Maan, Harinder Bhullar and Gurnam Sidhu. Students of various schools and other educational institutes participated in various events with zest and zeal.
