Residents of Ramdittewala village under the Mansa municipal council have been facing problems because of the dumping of the untreated sewage water on seven acres of land at the village.
A project was to be started here at a cost of Rs 7 crore, which was supposed to carry the sewage water of the entire Mansa town. The commissioning of the treatment plant to treat the sewage water was started recently that could give a sigh of relief to the locals after around two months.
The groundwater is polluted; a foul smell emanates from the place and mosquitoes abound here. The construction of the sewage treatment plant (STP) was started around two years ago and was completed recently.
Major Singh Mann, a farmer, says, "As we switch on the motor to pump out groundwater for irrigation, we get almost black water in the beginning. Our land is situated metres away from here. The sewage water enters the fields during rains and destroys the crop. The polluted groundwater has badly affected the area, but the health authorities have never visited the place."
Councillor Atamjit Singh Kala says, "The project is almost complete. Only the commissioning of the project is awaited and will be started soon. We are concerned about the problems being faced by the locals and have completed the project at a fast pace."
Executive engineer Surinder Kumar says, "The project is almost complete and the stabilisation of the STP to treat the sewage water has been started since May 11. Now, the sewage water will be treated and supplied for irrigation. The STP will treat around 14 million litres of sewage water per day."
