Vigilance probing cases of result change of BDS students at Baba Farid varsity
A student was awarded six grace marks after she applied for these; rules say grace marks cannot be applied for, with the ceiling kept at five marks.
The vigilance bureau is investigating alleged violation of rules related to rechecking of answer sheets and awarding of grace marks at Baba Farid University of Health Sciences, Faridkot. Documents that HT has accessed show that the varsity has flouted rules in two cases.
A Bathinda resident, Dr Manjit Singh Juara, had filed a complaint with the Punjab vigilance bureau in June 2017.
In the first case, the result of a first-year-student, Janbeer, enrolled at the Genesis Institute of Dental Sciences and Research, Ferozepur, was changed to pass and having a score of 356 marks on April 7, 2016. The candidate had taken the exam in November/December 2015, under Roll number 21541004. His initial result, as declared on February 4, 2016, was ‘RL - Award dispute’ in the subject of anatomy.
He applied for rechecking of the answer sheet, the result of which was declared on March 11, 2016, as ‘No Change’. This was also uploaded on the varsity website. From here, the alleged irregularity crept in. The office of the BFUHS registrar issued an office note on March 21, 2016, for revaluation of the answer sheet.
Under the rules, there is no provision of re-evaluation. This notification was also not uploaded on the university website. Finally, the candidate was declared as pass two weeks later.
The second case is a violation of the policy of awarding grace marks. Grace marks are awarded automatically to eligible candidates and students are not supposed to apply for these. At the most, only five grace marks can be given, the policy says.
However, documents in possession of HT show that Arashjot Kaur, who took BDS second year exam in May/June 2015 under roll number 22531158 was given six grace marks after she applied for them on November 22, 2015. This was three months after the results had been declared on August 21, 2015.
Bathinda vigilance bureau SSP Jagjit Singh confirmed that the cases were under investigation. Despite repeated attempts, BFUHS vice-chancellor Dr Raj Bahadur could not be contacted. Registrar SP Singh refused to comment.
