Protesting against the alleged laxity of the Batala police in taking action against the in-laws of a woman, who was found dead under suspicious circumstances on Monday, hundreds of residents of Khabbey Rajputan village, along with the family members of the deceased, blocked the national highway-4 here on Tuesday.
The protesters placed the body of the deceased at the Gandhi Chowk, raised slogans against the police and blocked the traffic on the Amritsar-Pathankot highway for more than four hours.
Deceased's father, Gurdev Singh, a resident of Khabbey Rajputan under Mehta police station, said that he had married his daughter, Kanwaljeet Kaur with Avtar Singh of Batala around five years ago.
He claimed that they spent a "good amount" of money on her marriage but despite that the in-laws of her daughter used to pressurise her to bring more dowry.
Gurdev Singh further said that while making dowry demands, Kanwaljeet's husband assaulted her many a time and sent her back to their home, but every time after the intervention of some "respectable persons", they sent her back to Avtar's house.
Around a fortnight ago, Avtar Singh asked Kanwaljeet to bring some money for him and when she expressed her inability to do so, Avtar thrashed her and sent her to their home. However, after a couple days, Avtar again took her along with him, he added.
Gurdev said that on Monday evening, he received information that his daughter was lying unconscious at her in-laws' house. Subsequently, he and other family members rushed to the spot and found Kanwaljeet lying on the floor. They took her to the civil hospital, where the doctors declared her brought dead.
Later, they lodged a complaint against Avtar Singh and his family members but city police station SHO Lakhwinder Singh refused to register case against his family members "for the reasons best known to him".
Demanding registration of a case against his family members and their immediate arrest, the protesters alleged that instead of registering a case against all the family members of Avtar Singh, who allegedly killed Kanwaljeet Kaur, the police have only booked Avtar.
