Investigations by the cyber crime cell of the Punjab police landed a youth in jail who created a fake Facebook ID of a girl and uploaded obscene messages and images on it.
Gurvinder Singh of Masitpal Kot village in Tanda had known the girl for some time and was keen to marry her but when she rejected his proposal, he became vindictive and in order to malign her, put her morphed pictures on the net by creating her fake profile on the social networking site.
The complaint was sent to the cyber crime cell and during investigation it was found that he had used different cyber cafes to create and operate Facebook accounts. Information obtained from the Facebook headquarters, US, revealed that three IDs were created on May 16, 26 and 27 and activity of these IDs had taken place from different IP addresses, which were traced to two cyber cafes in Tanda.
When the owners of these cafes were questioned, they revealed that at the given date and time, the Internet was used by Gurvinder Singh. "Since the girl too had suspected the same person, he was taken into custody and a case was registered against him under Section 66-A, 66-B and 67-A of the Information and Technology Act and Section 500 (defamation) and 509 (gesture to insult the modesty of a woman) of IPC," said senior superintendent of police Narinder Bhargav.
