Mahesh Babu’s Spyder has grossed over Rs 100 crore worldwide in its opening weekend. However, the highly anticipated, big-budget spy thriller is struggling to hold its ground at the ticket window and is yet to break even in most areas, according to trade sources. In Telugu states, after the first two days the film fell flat and despite decent opening has failed to set the cash registers on fire. Since the film was sold for very high prices across most areas in Andhra and Telangana, the mixed reviews and general talk didn’t work in favour of the film.

Made on a lavish budget of around Rs 120 crore, the film was directed by A.R Murugadoss, who had teamed up with Mahesh Babu for the first time. In the film, Mahesh played an intelligence bureau officer; while SJ Suryah played a ruthless, cold-blooded serial killer who suffers from sadistic personality disorder. Scenes between Mahesh Babu and Suryah were the film’s biggest highlights. However, their chemistry alone couldn’t save the film from not being a damp squib. In Tamil Nadu, the film did decent business and it was only possible because it wasn’t sold for high price unlike its Telugu version. Nevertheless, the film is yet to enter profit zone in Tamil Nadu.
In the US, bought for a whopping Rs 18 crore, the film has so far recovered only around Rs 10 crore. On Wednesday, it finally managed to enter $1.5 million club but the pace at which its performing at the ticket window, it looks like it’s going to end up as Mahesh’s biggest disaster in terms of return on investment.
