After remaking in Hindi Gemini channel’s Telegu show Rakta Sambandham, UTV’s TV production team is working on a remake of Kolangal, a Tamil show on Sun TV. While Rakta Sambandham, renamed Rakta Sambandha, was aired on Imagine, Kolangal’s telecast will begin on Star Plus this September.
“The show’s concept and casting are currently being worked upon. The audience has now changed, and this is an important factor to consider when taking a ready-to-use concept from one language to another,” says Ronnie Screwvala, CEO of UTV, which turns two decades old this year.
Kolangal has run on Sun TV for over five years, completing more than 1,000 episodes. Directed by V Thiruselvam, it’s the story of Abhi, a hardworking and ambitious woman, and her business rival and half brother, Aditya. The company is also in talks with various Hindi general entertainment channels (GECs) over their popular Tamil non-fiction show, Deala No Deala, currently running on Sun TV. “The show has done well down south. It’s the number one non-fiction show on the channel. Plans are in place to remake it in Hindi. But it’s too early to divulge details,” says Screwvala.
Currently, UTV’s TV show production division generates content for over 1,456 hours a year, spread out over shows such as Emotional Atyachaar 2 (Bindass), Rathasapthami (Udaya TV), Veer Marthandwarma (Surya TV), Prajakta (Mi Marathi) and Maaylek (ETV Marathi) making it one of the largest TV content producers in India. “No wise TV show producer would like to restrict himself to producing content only in one language. Bengali, Marathi and Gujarati GECs are developing rapidly. The south market, too, is flourishing. It makes sense to expand,” asserts Screwvala.

Screwvala, without divulging much, says, “The last time, we adopted a granule-sized place in the city. This time, the concept revolves around generations of people and their lives.”
