RIO DE JANEIRO: The Rio Olympics offers expensive beer. Expensive, for the same can is available for one-third the price just a hop away from the venues. A beer costs about Rs 250 and all of us who sport our proudly earned beer bellies know that paying more for the same stuff only makes it taste worse.
Anyway, to beer or not to beer is never the choice and one would pay extra for the privilege of having a drink while watching the best of sporting action in the world. One presumes that’s exactly what the organisers are counting on too. But they do have a nice way of sweetening the deal as the cups that they serve the stuff in make for superb souvenirs. The reasonably sturdy plastic cups come emblazoned with the Games logo and many a patron is seen lugging them back home after the matches are over. In fact, such is the zeal for the things that people have looked on in dismay when your correspondent dumped his into the litter can. Now, I just put them in a corner and sure enough they disappear from the spot pretty fast.
