NEW DELHI: Country’s largest paramilitary force, the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) has decided to appoint Olympic silver medallist PV Sindhu as it’s brand ambassador and bestow the honorary rank of Commandant on the ace badminton player.

Sindhu won a historic silver in the women’s singles badminton at the recently concluded Rio Olympic Games.

A Commandant in the CRPF is equivalent to the position of a Superintendent of Police (SP).

VIKAS EYES WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS

NEW DELHI: The coveted Olympic medal eluded him yet again but far from being bogged down, boxer Vikas Krishan says he is now aiming to become the first Indian to clinch two medals at the World Championships next year irrespective of whether a national federation takes shape or not. The 24-year-old, who won a bronze medal at the 2011 World Championships – one of only three Indians to have done this, lost in the quarterfinals of the Olympic Games in Rio.

“It was a good competition for me. I missed the medal but I think my performance was good,” said Vikas.

FC GOA LEAVES FOR BRAZIL FOR TRAINING

PANAJI: Twelve FC Goa players, on Monday, left for Rio de Janeiro, Brazil to train at head coach Zico’s football academy, Zico 10, to prepare for the ISL3.

While the 12 players departed from the Dabolim International Airport in the afternoon, the international players of the franchise will join them in Brazil.

Goa’s Fulganco Cardozo, who has been selected for the national team’s encounter against Puerto Rico in Mumbai on September 3, will join the squad in Rio de Janeiro later. Sanjay Balmuchu and Raju Gaikwad will also join the team later due to commitments with their parent club.

Head coach Zico’s idea behind taking FC Goa to his home country is to expose them against some tough opponents, which would give them the much needed practice to play against teams in the ISL.

DSK SHIVAJIANS SIGN STRIKER KIM SONG-YONG

PUNE: DSK Shivajians Football Club, on Monday, announced the signing of North Korean striker Kim Song-Yong for the forthcoming Hero Indian Super League season. The former North Korean international, who has vast experience of playing in India, joins the club on a two-year deal. Kim is the third foreign signing of Pune-based outfit this season after Spaniard Juan Quero and Irishman Shane McFaul.

MALOUDA RETURNS AS DELHI’S MARQUEE NEW

DELHI: Delhi Dynamos, on Monday, announced the return of UEFA Champions League winner Florent Malouda as their marquee player for the upcoming ISL season. Malouda arrival will bolster the Delhi line-up given his performances and form with the Egyptian Premier League club Wadi Degla where he was out on loan after a stellar debut season in the ISL2.
