Somdev Devvarman to be felicitated by Tripura govt

Somdev Devvarman, who became the first Indian to win gold in the men's singles tennis at the Common Wealth Games would be given a public reception by the Tripura government and the state tennis association.

Somdev Devvarman, who became the first Indian to win gold in the men's singles tennis at the Common Wealth Games would be given a public reception by the Tripura government and the state tennis association.

25-year-old Devvarman belongs to the Tripura's erstwhile royal family yesterday defeated Australia's Greg Jones 6-4, 6-2 in the final to win the gold.

"We would felicitate Somdev. His victory proves that there is nor dearth of talent in Tripura as well as in the north-eastern region," Tripura Sports Council Secretary, Kamal Saha said today.

The tennis star is expected to visit his home in Agartala soon and will be given a reception by Tripura government and the Tripura Tennis Association.

Somdev’s father Pravanjan Devvarman, a retired commissioner of Income Tax said "his (Somdev's) performance made us proud, made our country proud. He gave best performance of his career."

"We feel proud at his performance. His success would encourage the young tennis players of the state to go ahead," Tripura Tennis Association secretary Sujit Roy told PTI.

The Association has requested the state government to provide land for the proposed tennis court.
