At least six people were killed and four injured when a speeding Audi rammed into a bus stop and an auto rickshaw in Coimbatore on Wednesday. The driver, identified as 42-year-old Jagadeesh, has been taken into custody.
Police said the accident occurred after the driver lost control over the speeding vehicle.
“The SUV was on its way to Coimbatore from nearby Pollachi when it crashed into the Periyar bus stop in Sundharapuram around 9.30 am. It then rammed into an auto rickshaw parked on the roadside, killing two people seated inside. It came to a halt only after hitting a roadside flower shop and an electric pole,” an officer said on condition of anonymity.
Police identified the victims, three of whom were women, as V Narayanasamy (70), C Amsaveni (34), N Subashini (18), N Kuppammal (70), Sri Rangadas (69) and Sonu. The injured are undergoing treatment at the Coimbatore government medical college.
Police said the car belonged to Madhan K Senthil, owner of Rathinam College in Echanari. Onlookers alleged that the driver, Jagadeesh, was in an inebriated state.
