Vehicles and chaos back at pedestrian-friendly markets

A ground check by HT on Sunday found the lane marked for emergency services on the Ajmal Khan Road has been taken over by vehicles, street lights have been stained by people chewing paan or gutkha spitting on them, and cars and two-vehicles parked near the benches meant for the shoppers to relax.

At a time when the efforts are being made to develop pedestrian-friendly areas or zones —pedestrianisation of Ajmal Khan Road in Karol Bagh by the North Delhi Municipal Corporation is a case in point—restrictions like the one imposed at India Gate only defeats the purpose.

The traders demanded that the Delhi civic body either allows vehicular movement on Ajmal Khan road or opens at least one lane for vehicles. They are also demanding more parking space.

The civic body, with the help from traffic police, has been trying to create a holistic vehicle circulation plan to decongest and beautify the busy market in central Delhi.

The North Delhi Municipal Corporation will plant at least 75 of these on the median of the almost two-kilometre stretch of Ajmal Khan Road, as per plans of the civic body’s horticulture department.

Women-only spaces may be a good short-term solution, but in the longer run all spaces have to be made safe; we cannot have a city that is gender segregated. We must look at our cities’ inherent problems

Officials said as of now, only half of the 1km road is open to pedestrians and soon, the whole of the Ajmal Khan Road will be earmarked for pedestrians. The Shahjahanabad Redevelopment Corporation has also launched a project to remove vehicles from Chandni Chowk, likely to be completed early next year.
