“Last year was, of course, a record. We crossed $650 billion (of exports) in goods and services. This year, we aim for an even bigger record,” commerce minister Piyush Goyal said on Saturday while speaking at the Raisina Dialogue 2023. India’s exports in 2021-22 was $676 billion.

India likely to continue curbs on wheat, rice exports

The government banned wheat exports in May last year as overseas sales from the world’s second-largest producer rose due to the Ukraine war at a time when production fell 2.5% due to a heatwave, straining availability.

The overall production of wheat reached 106.84 million tonnes, reporting a dip of 2.75 million tonnes as compared to 109.59 million tonnes estimated during the 2020-21 season, according to the Fourth Advance Estimates of Production of Foodgrains for 2021-22 released by the Union ministry of agriculture and farmers welfare. The limit on exportable quantity comes amid the Union government’s efforts to rapidly scale up its ethanol-blending programme.

India's overall exports in September 2022 estimated at $61 billion, says Centre

In its preliminary data, which was released in the first week of this month, the ministry stated that the country's merchandise exports contracted by 3.52 per cent to USD 32.62 billion in September.
