This year, 17 animals, mainly deer, were killed by speeding vehicles while crossing the highway in Kaziranga. The flyover is expected to reduce animal fatalities.

On May 8, chunks of concrete fell from the main carriageway of flyover, leaving a 70-sq-inch hole in the main carriage way of the road.
To ensure that no further damage is caused to the Hero Honda Chowk flyover, the traffic police on Thursday decided to restrict the movement of heavy vehicles on the flyover and started diverting them to the service lane from 5pm.

Traffic officials said that heavy vehicles will not be allowed till the flyover is repaired, although all four lanes of the carriageway were opened for regular traffic by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI).

Dehradun-based Wildlife Institute of India (WII), in a study conducted in 2017 named ‘Impact of national highways on wildlife in the Haridwar Forest division’, had recorded 222 deaths of wild animals on National Highway-74 which connects Dehradun to Haridwar.

“Apart from rail flyovers, we are also trying to increase speed of trains during crossover. When a train changes the line, the speed restriction is of 15km per hour, which we are trying to increase to 30kmph and eventually we will do the crossover at 50kmph. We will need to do signalling changes for this and we are in the process of doing it,” said VK Yadav, railway board chairman.

Till now, the stretch in front of Subroto Park on NH-8 would see major traffic snarls and commuters travelling between Gurugram and Delhi faced a harrowing time crossing the nearly two-km long stretch between Parade Road crossing and Dhaula Kuan.
