California announces first confirmed case of new Covid-19 variant

The first person in the US known to be infected with the variant was identified Wednesday as a Colorado National Guardsman who had been sent to help out at a nursing home struggling with an outbreak.

In just a week, wildfires burn 1 million acres in California

Since thousands of lightning strikes began on August 15, California responded to 585 wildfires that have burned nearly a million acres, or 1,562 square miles (4,046 square kilometers), according to CalFire.

California Governor Gavin Newsom declared an emergency as he reported the state’s first fatality from the Covid-19 illness -- an elderly person who had taken a cruise to Mexico -- while health officials in nearby Washington state said a 10th person had died there.

Newsom was convinced by statistics suggesting that perhaps dozens of the 737 inmates on the state’s death row were innocent. The state has not held an execution since 2006 but appeared to be moving towards resuming them.
