A bench headed by Chief Justice S A Bobde took note of submissions of lawyer and PIL petitioner ML Sharma that companies be prosecuted for alleged evasion of export duty by declaring wrong tariff code to export iron ore.

The most-active copper contract on the Shanghai Futures Exchange, iron ore on the Dalian Commodity Exchange and crude oil on the International Energy Exchange all fell by the maximum daily limit at the open, with copper down 7% and crude oil and iron ore down 8%.

Government plans to auction over 100 mines in six months

The government has so far auctioned 50 mines, including 23 limestone, 17 iron ore, four gold, two each of manganese and graphite, and one each of bauxite and diamond, earning Rs 1.81 lakh crore.

The mining fund is being used for big-ticket projects. In Odisha, it’s helping build classrooms, while in Chhattisgarh it’s being used to supply potable water.
