At least 62 persons died and a large number of people lost their homes in the riots in September 2013. A total of 503 cases were lodged against around 1,455 persons in Muzaffarnagar and Shamli by the then SP government.

According to circle officer Rajesh Kumar Tiwari, the girl’s body was found in an agricultural field in Kailshikapur village on Monday evening. He said it appeared that she was strangulated to death with her ‘dupatta’ after rape.
The accused, before leaving the woman on the spot, threatened her of dire consequences if she disclosed the matter, Dhama said. Police is interrogating the arrested men and a search is on for the third accused, he said.(HT image)
