27K arrested in 91k cases of manufacturing, sale of illicit liquor last fiscal

Excise teams in India have been conducting "test purchases" from liquor vendors to tackle overpricing, according to department commissioner Senthil Pandian. The sale of liquor over the printed price has been frequently flagged by consumers across the state. Pandian said the department?s aggressive monitoring has significantly improved the situation and that in cases of severe irregularities, vendors? licences have been revoked.

As many as 29,701 persons have been arrested in connection with the manufacturing/sale of illicit liquor and 26.68 lakh litre of illicit liquor was seized in several enforcement drives carried out in 2022-23 alone (For representation)

Whole sale price inflation eases to 13.93% in July

In July, wholesale prices index-based inflation, which is akin to producer prices, rose lower than a forecast of 14.20% in a Reuters poll of analysts, and compared with 15.18% the previous month.

Wholesale inflation shoots up to 14.5% on pricier fuels

The latest WPI value, which is the second highest in the current series (since April 2012), comes after retail inflation, as measured by the Consumer Price Index (CPI), surprised analysts to grow at 6.95% in March 2022.
